Ofion introduces clear peel seal lids for the first time into this market….!

Ofion is pleased to present its latest innovation in high clarity heat sealable/peelable lidding films for APET, rPET and ready meal trays. RockLID® SPXand MPX. Both films are available with our high performance Anti-fog (AF), print, barrier or perforation.

RockLID® is available with corona and acrylic treatment for printing and laminating, making it ideal for printing as well. We offer these films in 12, 25, 18, 23, 28, 36 and 50 microns.
RockLID® 50PET is also available for converters wishing to produce Die Cut Lids.




MERITS OF CLEAR LIDDING FILM TO REPLACE FOIL LIDDING FOR MINERAL WATER CUPS :
This document sets out the advantages of using clear film by replacing the current aluminum foil lidding with clear 100% PET based Peelable SPX or LT-36mu film.

The following advantages would be gained by changing from foil lidding film to clear 100% PET based film:

  • The film is more economical and there would significant savings in cost by using film to replace current aluminum lidding stock.
  • Using a clear film highlights the pure nature of the water cup with the production of a more elegant looking cup. It does not make sense to have a glass clear APET cup with clear water in it and then to lid it with a thick aluminum opaque lid. The whole aesthetics of the clear cup is compromised.
  • A clear lid would be a marketing dream.
  • The combination of clear lid and APET clear cup make a package that is 100% polyester and this is easily recyclable. The current cup lid is not recyclable.
  • When producing the cups, there is significant amount of skeletal waste. Currently this waste is a mixed waste of foil and PET. This waste has very little value. When clear lid is used, the skeletal waste becomes 100% PET and can be sold as PET scrap. This scrap has high value. There should therefore be a significant income stream from this skeletal waste.
  • There would be twice as many meters of PET film on a reel than the current aluminum. This means that reel changeover is reduced by 50% and this saves production time. Also there is saving of arehouse space.

Lidex Universal Lids

Lidex lids are polyester-based lids with a heat seal lacquer to act as a universal sealant lid to various different material pots that are in use today. Lidex Universal lids will seal to PP, HIPS, OPS, Crystal-PS, PVC, PET, A luminium, PE, ABS, PC and paper.

Lidex Universal lids have the following advantages over foil lids:
  • Since no metal is used, metal detection is possible for the whole package.
  • Lidex lids peel off as one piece with no residue on the pot and without tearing into pieces.
  • The graphics on Lidex lids is brilliant with the use of lithographic process on polyester.
  • Lidex universal lids are competitive with foil lids
  • Because of the printing process involved (lithography), origination costs are low and small quantities can be handled without too many premiums.

Technical Data:
  • 50 micron polyester lids will have an ultimate weight of 77 GSM.
  • Standard foil dispensing units are OK for dispensing Lidex lids.
  • Temperature range: 170 deg C to 220 deg C.
  • Sealing pressure: 3 bar to 10 bar.
  • Dwell time: 1 second or more.

There are two grades available as follows:
  • Lidex-CA: This grade is specifically made for sealing to polystyrene cups.
  • Lidex-GP: This grade is made to seal to PP cups. It will seal to PS, PVC, APET, PLA, Aluminium etc.

Use of Lidex :

Please note that the client must carry out their own checks to determine the suitability of Lidex for their application by trials before ordering. The responsibility for the product sealability lies with the customer.
